Petnap Whelping Box & Pet Heat Pads
For many years now Petnap has been the home for pet breeding supplies, whether this is a whelping box, pet heat pad or whelping kit we have it stocked. Our range has progressed over the years and now hold many different size disposable whelping box and many different size pet heat pads as well as plastic reusable boxes.
Set your whelping box up ideally at least three weeks before the bitch is due so she becomes more and more used to being in it. Many breeders will feed their bitch inside the whelping box so she associates it with good things. It's also a good idea to get her to sleep in the box at night during the pre-whelping period. She should naturally want to be in her whelping box and shouldn't be forced to give treats and favourite toys to persuade her into going in to it.The whelping box can also serve as a playpen and home for the puppies until they are old enough to go to their new families. If you intend to keep the puppies in the whelping box ensure it is of a material sturdy enough to handle the wear and tear for at least 2 to 3 months after the pups are born. Also ensure that it is big enough to accommodate the suspected litter size at the age of 3 months. A pet heat pad is equally important when it comes to whelping. Puppies are reliant on a heat source other than their litter mates and mother as they struggle to control their own body temperature. A pet heat pad or puppy pad generates enough heat in order to keep the puppies from chilling they will simply lay on top of the heat pad and snuggle up with the rest of the litter. Over the years the heat pads have diverse a little and are now used to keep every day pets warm during the colder months like cats, dogs, rabbits, hedgehogs etc., although it's worth remembering that these pads were never intend to be used for anything other than puppies.

STEP 1 Select a whelping box
All our whelping boxes now include wooden puppy rails as standard
STEP 2 Add a Pet Fleece lining
The fleece bedding is machine washable, pre cut to fit the whelping box and designed to allow fluids to drain through the matting to provide a comfortable, clean and hygienic padding for the bitch and her litter of pups. Remember to put in lots of newpaper or absorbent pads under the vet fleece to absorb fluids. (Absorbent pads are available further down this page: step 5)
STEP 4 Absorbent pads
23" x 29" (730mm x 580mm) Absorbent Pads:
STEP A Choose the correctly sized whelping box
Our plastic re-useable whelping boxes are all 12inches tall. The 24" box opening is 6" inches high, the 30" box opening is 6.5" high and the 36" box opening is 7" high.
22cm x 33cm, aluminium alloy Petnap heat pad. THIS HEATPAD DOES NOT HAVE THE ARMOURED CONDUIT
STEP 3 Add Petnap Heat Pad
In their early days of life a newborn puppy is totally dependant on warmth being provided for it. One common cause for premature deaths is hypothermia. There are a number of forms of heating available but we recommend using a heat pad in your whelping box as these are low wattage and so low cost to run and provide warmth where it is needed (under the pups) rather than heating the atmosphere. We have three sizes available and all are listed complete with a fleece cover. We suggest these are used on top of vet fleece, not under it. No more than half of the whelping box floor should be heated. These are vinyl pads and so not suitable for pets that chew, if you would prefer metal pads then please follow this
